Emily Carney is a distinguished spaceflight historian, writer, and podcaster, celebrated for her significant contributions to space advocacy and education. In 2011 she founded the Space Hipsters Facebook group, which has since evolved into a thriving global community of over 60,000 members dedicated to the past, present, and future of space exploration, and writes a regular blog This Space Available which appears on the NSS website. A former U.S. Navy nuclear technician, Emily now serves as the manager of public engagement and social media for the Space 3.0 Foundation. She also co-hosted the acclaimed Space and Things podcast, which highlighted fascinating topics in spaceflight history and current space initiatives. Her efforts have earned her recognition as one of the National Space Society’s Top 10 Space Influencers in 2018, solidifying her role as a leading voice in the spaceflight community.

Bruce McCandless III, the son of NASA astronaut Bruce McCandless II, grew up in the shadow of Houston’s Johnson Space Center during the Apollo and Skylab eras, watching Batman and Buzz Aldrin with equal enthusiasm. He graduated from the Plan II Honors Program of the University of Texas at Austin and went on to earn an M.A. from the University of Reading in England and a J.D. from the UT School of Law. In addition to Wonders All Around: The Incredible True Story of Astronaut Bruce McCandless II and The First Untethered Flight in Space, published in 2021, Bruce is the author of the science fiction novel Sour Lake (2011), the modern fairy tale Beatrice and the Basilisk (2014), and the Western supernatural thriller In the Land of Dead Horses (2021). He has also published poems, features, and essays in a variety of journals, including Smithsonian’s Air and Space Magazine, the Texas Observer, the Seattle Review, the Wall Street Journal Asia, Pleiades, Cold Mountain Review, and the Houston Chronicle. Bruce and his wife, Pati McCandless, live in Austin.
