The 2017 NSS International Space Development Conference (ISDC) gave birth to a remarkable program for students interested in learning about cutting-edge technology and its role on and beyond Earth.

The NSS Global Space Debates (formerly known as the spUN Debates, an acronym for space policy and UNiversalization) emerged after the presentation by Dr. Lorna Jean Edmonds, Ohio University, “Do Those Who Control the Galaxy Control Earth: The Century of Universalization”.

Universalization shifts focus from Earth’s globalization to governing “the world within the universe” and making outer space the next frontier for all. To sustain humanity’s diversity within a universal construct, an inclusive and cooperative approach to space governance is essential, encompassing habitation, exploration, discovery, resource management, and crisis mitigation. Dr. Edmonds’ presentation was a ‘call to action’, urging the next generation to engage in shaping the future of Earth and space governance.

The NSS Global Space Debates Program sparks the idea of a space policy debate focused on universalization, aiming to ignite students’ passion for space governance through debate. The vision is to develop a publicly accessible debating community for the next generation from all cultures, communities, and languages worldwide, promoting cooperation, considering policies and positions that will be used beyond our globe.

Global Students Debaters

High school and university debate teams are formed with students from around the world who learn about challenges in space development and utilization. The NSS Global Space Debates Program gives them the opportunity to research and debate the ramifications of emerging policy, honing public speaking and debate skills that will enhance resumes and career development, serving them in whatever profession they choose.

Debate Mentors

Professional coaches mentor novice and veteran debaters on multinational teams, advising them in teamwork and effective argument delivery. Professional judges evaluate tournament decisions based on the delivery, validity, and importance of the arguments presented.

Developing Leaders

If you want to critically analyze space exploration and governance and refine your public speaking, while learning the leadership skills of inclusive cooperation with students worldwide, this is the debate program to consider.

Veteran spUN debaters describe what is now the NSS Global Space Debates in their own words:

GSD is an international competition to hone speech, debate, and leadership skills, and learn about the quickly evolving space industry and your place in it.
