SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has made numerous public statements about SpaceX plans to send humans to Mars in the next 10 to 20 years (e.g. see Discovery News and PC Magazine). The most recent statement was at an August 1 meeting of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) meeting in San Diego. A video of the Q & A session is below.

  1. I am mark christian santos 14 y/o from cebu city,philippines…

    MY PLANS FOR MARS ARE:
1ST: IF I AM A SCIENTIST, I WILL BUILT A GIANT MIRROR IN SPACE AND REFLECT THE LIGHT FROM THE SUN TO PLANET MARS SO THAT THE ICE WILL MELT INTO WATER AND THEN MARS WILL BE A HABITABLE PLANET.
    N.A.S.A. is it possible?…
2ND: I WILL TRANSFERE PLANET MARS INTO THE ORBIT OF THE EARTH SO THAT MARS WILL BE LOCATED IN THE HABITABLE ZONE…..
It is impossible but i just sugesting…

  2. Hi Mark,

It is clear that you have a great interest in the future of space development. I wish you well in your studies and future career.

    1) Yes, your idea of a space mirror to heat the Martian polar ice cap is a good one. Other scientists have thought of the same concept. Also, you might want to consider placing black carbon on the polar ice caps so that they absorb rather than reflect sunlight. Other scientists have thought about warming Mars by producing very strong greenhouse gases.

    2) Moving Mars into the habitable zone would of course be great if we could do it. The problem is that Mars is so massive, it would be nearly impossible to accomplish.

You may also want to look into something called “paraterraforming” as a relatively simple way of creating a high-enough pressure environment for people to live in. This would best be done before you start melting the ice caps.
