Space Colony
Contest 1997 Results
Statistics
There were 89 entries by 208 students, and 12 schools
participated. Entries came from Israel, Canada and the U.S. Once
again space settlement powerhouse John Swett High School dominated
the 6-9 grade prizes. This year they were joined by newcomer
Richard Montgomery High School which did very well in the 10-12
grade category. Josh Looks, who has moved to Israel, and Northern
Secondary School in Canada took first place in their categories for
the second year in a row. The U.S. regained grand prize status from
Argentina with an exceptional effort by Nyssa Stephanie Rene Woods.
The judges were especially pleased that the contest received
entries outside the sciences from the Alabama School of Fine Arts
and others. Ralston Middle School had the best models, we wish
there was some way to put them on the WWW. Many thanks for all the
hard work and enthusiasm from a wonderful world wide group of
students and educators.
Winners
Grand Prize
The grand prize went to Nyssa Stephanie Rene Woods, a 12 year old
student from Seton Home Study School, Jacksonville, Illinois. This
strong technical project is called "SCORE:
Self Contained Off-world Residential Environment." Among a
wealth of good engineering, Nyssa has created the most complete
space settlement food and agriculture analysis the contest
organizers have seen anywhere.
Note: for the rest of the prizes there were individual and
team awards for two groups: 6-9th grade and 10-12th grade. Team
members are listed in alphabetical order. There were a number of
ties.
