The National Space Society vision is people living and working in space

Peter Schubert

National Space Society Board of Directors

Peter Schubert is director of the Richard G. Lugar Center for Renewable Energy at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He is also a named professor of electrical and computer engineering at IUPUI. Part of his portfolio is the work he is doing to advance space solar power. He was previously principal investigator on a NASA small business innovation research grant to extract oxygen and silicon from lunar soil.

In 2004 Peter was selected to be the national chairman of the NSS Legislative Blitz (the NSS annual effort to orchestrate meetings with members of Congress) and he has participated in three of these events. He chaired the Space & Environment track at NSS's 2010 International Space Development Conference and has attended and presented original research at six of the previous seven ISDCs.

Peter is a member of the AIAA Space Colonization Technical Committee and has co-chaired a track devoted to space solar power at the AIAA SPACE Conference. His technical qualifications include 35 patents, six of which relate to space manufacturing and in-space propulsion; and 75 technical papers, including 12 related to space technology.

In 2007 Peter received a $1,000,000 USDA grant on a means to convert agricultural residues into energy for the farm. The concept was derived from his space patents, and led to another $3.6 million in related grants. The process is scheduled to be commercialized.
